Fifteen Minutes of Allstate Commercials
by Adrian Hanft, (0 comments)

Have you seen the commercial on TV by Allstate Insurance? It is just terrible. It starts out saying "Someone once said that we'll all be famous for fifteen minutes." It goes on to say that Allstate believes that you deserve more than fifteen minutes if that's what it takes to ensure you get the coverage that's right for you. I am hoping that if I take a few minutes to dissect this commercial I will be able to understand why it bothers me so much.

First of all, this is not an anonymous saying. Hopefully everyone knows that Andy Warhol is the author of the infamous phrase. I think his actual quote is "In the future everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes." It is amazing how overused and misunderstood this phrase has become. In context, it is such a sharp comment on pop culture when you recognize the sardonic tone that Warhol so cunningly spoke with. If you understand the subtle undertones of that statement, you most likely are able to fully appreciate the genius of Warhol's art.
I doubt that Allstate's marketing department is oblivious to who made the quote. Most likely they just didn't like the way Andy Warhol's name would have colored the commercial. So without the meat behind the phrase, this quote really doesn't make any sense, especially in the context of insurance. Making an insurance claim is not going to make anyone famous. Even if it did, who would want to be famous for buying insurance from Allstate? What does an empty stage with a spotlight have to do with insurance? Hopefully I am not the only person asking this question, and Allstate will realize how ridiculous the commercial is. Maybe they will pull it off the air and save me from having to watch it again.
