iPod Killed the Radio Star

Video never really fulfilled its promise to kill the radio star, but maybe the iPod will. I haven't listened to the radio for probably 5 years. Actually I do listen to talk radio, but I can't handle the stations that play music. Between the constant advertising, the annoying DJ personalities, the repetition of flavor-of-the-month songs, and the shallow assortment of artists, I had to give up radio.

Between the constant advertising, the annoying DJ personalities, the repetition of flavor-of-the-month songs, and the shallow assortment of artists, I had to give up radio. I came across this article
that talks about how the iPod is revolutionizing the way we listen to music. It has a funny quote from a radio program director who is in denial about the doom of radio. He says:

"Stations like 'BCN provide a mix of songs and patter, and cull from thousands of CDs, providing a filter for listeners who cannot wade through stacks of new releases on their own. Stations like 'BCN provide a mix of songs and patter, he argues, and cull from thousands of CDs, providing a filter for listeners who cannot wade through stacks of new releases on their own."

I guess we should be thanking him for the valuable service he provides. Filtering out the everything but the one-hit-wonders has got to be a tough. What a saint. At least he does acknowlege the effects of the digital revolution and says, "Requests have fallen off dramatically over the past five years, primarily because of downloading." At least that leaves more time for advertisements and the "patter" that we all listen to radio for. Is my iPod done recharging yet?
