The Hand I Was Dealt

I went to the Nebraska AIGA event Design the Hand You’re Dealt this weekend. It was great. This event was set up as a competition between designers from around the state. Each designer was randomly given a hand of five cards and let loose to design with very few restrictions, which apparently only a few people actually read. The submissions were then judged by a panel of three judges and the winners were included in a limited edition deck and displayed at 8” x 12” at the gallery event. Overall it was a great deck of cards and a huge accomplishment for AIGA Nebraska.

I was pretty happy with my submission and even happier that one card, my Joker, was included in the deck. Hopefully the entire deck will be posted for the world to see at nebraska.aiga.org. I’m fairly sure that the final deck will be available to purchase there soon.

I received Best Wild Card. I have also included a link to my other four cards. I was shooting for The Best Hand, which I obviously didn’t get. I think my cards make more sense as a group then they do individually. Hopefully you can follow the story through the cards. In the story line the Joker is the second card, coming after the Queen of Hearts. I heard different people mention throughout the evening that they would like to see the rest of the hand for this card or that card.

Maybe we can get Travis Gray to let us post his near sweep of a hand. Six awards out of a possible eleven isn’t bad. They were very nice indeed. Of course how can you not win an award if you have Rosewood screened in the background. Was that petty? Sorry. I’m just jealous. Congrats Travis!
