Varmint Hunter or What Were They Thinking? 3
by Bennett Holzworth, (7 comments)

Yes, there is such a thing as Varmint Hunter magazine. The saddest part is this cover. In an apparent attempt to look patriotic they have labeled our noble bald eagle as a varmint. The text at the bottom reads Land Of The Free, Home Of The Brave. I wonder if they received some letters to the editor on this cover. This might be alright if they occasionally had things other than varmints on their cover, but I looked at a couple of other covers and they all had varmints on the cover. It is amazing that people dont think before they design or publish.

That is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. That is to say, it would be if really bad decisions equated to being awesome. It’s actually two-fold. Not only is it implying that the bald-eagle ó symbol of our nation ó is a varment, but also that you should hunt it. According to the government, a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year in prison ($10,000 or two years in prison for a second conviction) will befall anyone who attempts to “pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb” the Varment. BEST MAGAZINE EVER.

Call me crazy…but arent they implying that the eagle is the varment hunter rather than the varment? they eat varmints - mice etc…so its pretty clear to me that it is the hunter itself and therefore maybe that is why they chose it as the cover for “varment hunter” magazine….
thoughts?

Jill,
You make a good point, but I severely doubt they thought it out that far. Like I mentioned, I have seen a few other covers of their magazine and they all have official varmints on them, such as prairie dogs and coyotes. Even it is their intention to portray the bald eagle as a varmint hunter, it obviously didn’t come across to most people. I have shown this cover to about ten people and you are the first to see any redeeming quality in it. Even though it is the truth I don’t think Americans like to think of our precious symbol as a scavenger and predator of small animals. For being able to find good in this cover, you should be praised.

Just wondered if good old Varmint Magazine had a website. Look’s like the magazine is a byproduct of The Varmint Hunters Association. (They have a very cool badge on their homepage…I wants one.)

ODD. i think it would be worth shooting them an email…get it? “shooting” them an email? heh heh

“Can’t say the name without breaking in to laughter. Suprisingly addictive, good photography, well-written gun reviews, assuming you’re in to the whole “white trash” thing.”

Jill - You are dead on. And yes a good deal of thought went into the consideration of the Eagle on the cover. not all of the covers have been varmints, though a majority have been, which would make sense. As the members of the Varmint Hunters Assoc. want to see varmints, duh.
ProtfolioGenius, you might think a bit more thoroughly in the future, as Jill has, for more possibilities than that which you find so obvious.
