  • Stoner Drug or What Were They Thinking? 6

    Stoner_Drug_wwtt.jpg

Over the last few years I have collected photos and published pieces that have made me say “What Were They Thinking?” Some of these things I have posted in the past and I have plans to post more of these findings in the future. I have gone through my previous posts and retitled the appropriate posts with the title “What Were They Thinking?” Some of these are better than others, but the main goal is to make you chuckle.

I took this specific photo a few years ago and I’m not even sure which state I was in. I am positive this is an old middle school joke to the locals, but I will stoop to that level. Please, stoop with me.

Does anyone else see anything funny in the diamond shaped SD logo? My wife made a very astute observation. I will wait a couple of days to share it and see if anyone else comes up with the same thing.

    2. Nate Voss Says:

      I… I think it’s a vertical “J,” (not the letter)

    3. Adrian Says:

Maybe a stretch, but you could probably get an “LSD” out of it…

…or a sideways stoned smily face.

    4. Bennett Says:

Very interesting observations, but not what I was thinking. I like the sideways stoned smiley face idea. I don’t think anyone would see that without the proliferation of emoticons.

    5. Bennett Says:

Just a little clue into this little mystery. Focus on the “SD” initials. Have you seen this anywhere else?

    6. Bennett Says:

Without further adieu . . . Look at our childhood friend’s collar.

    7. Adrian Says:

Wow, I never would have figured that out. Either Suz has a photographic memory, or she watched way too much Scooby Doo as a kid (who didn’t?). That deserves a Scooby snack if you ask me…

    8. jared Says:

I was thinking that the S looks like a stream of smoke (possibly going up from a spliff perhaps – sorry, don’t smoke so i’m probably making a fool of myself trying to speak the speak)…anyways, that would go with the whole theme…

    9. Jill Rizzo Says:

Jared…i am right with you. thats totally what i thought it was…and i dont smoke….anymore.

but it totally goes with the “stoner drug” theme. it sells the store on a subconscious level….smart owners.

either that…or they are stoned off their gourds

    10. Bennett Says:

The stream of smoke idea just adds to the irony of this all. I think you could even steer Suzanne’s Scooby Doo (SD) logo observation in the way of the drug idea. What did go on in the Mystery Machine after all?

    11. beytjutus Says:

The sign in this picture is a legitimate drug store in Tabor, IA. My wife and I went throught this town of about 500 people last night and about crapped ourselves when we saw the sign. Believe it or not, you can buy T-shirts there! For those willing to make the drive, it is about 10 miles east of Interstate 29 (exit 24) in Iowa.

P.S. There is one in Hamburg, Iowa as well.

    12. James B Says:

Jill Rizzo …. your right about the mystery machine… why do you think shaggy & scooby were always hungry?

    13. Cory Says:

ha! We saw this while we were on tour. It is somewhere on the way from Omaha to Chicago. THere is absolutely no reason to go into this town unless ou have to pee.

    14. dtrain Says:

I’m originally from Tabor so I actually have two reasons to go there – 1) visit my parents and 2) pee.

    15. Mary Lynn Says:

Excuse me, but that is my dad’s store in Hamburg. Yes, there are more, but my Grandpa Stoner had the first one in Hamburg. No joke, and it took them a while to realize why people wanted to stop and have their picture taken under the sign. Stop in, use the facilities if you must, but be sure to order an old-fashioned malt from the soda fountain while you’re there!

    16. Bennett Says:

Mary Lynn, If I am in the area, I will definitely stop in for a malt. Nothing compares to the old-fashioned way. Thanks for the background.

    17. JEAN KILBY Says:

      Hi Mary Lynn ;

      Jean Kilby here.. donnnjean@earthlink.net

trying to find the Drug stores E mail address..
Want to send message to Toots & Marvin

      Jean

    18. Mark Says:

I grew up in this drug store and know all the Stoners. We were back for Christmas and on the way out of town, to head back home to Austin, my kids (13 & 14) always request that we “stop at Stoners for a malt”…. which by the way, are the best on the planet. This time my kids just had to have a Stoner’s tee shirt. They haven’t been sent home from school yet. Ok.. I bought one for myself too. I only wear it around people that know me and know I’m from Hamburg and know the Stoner story. Hi Mary Lynn… Hi Jean.

    19. Mary Says:

Hi, Mark! We were back in Hamburg for Popcorn Day, celebrating my 40th class reunion. Sure thing, there were folks from out of town standing in the middle of the street to get a picture of the “Stoner’s” sign.
The malts ARE the best, and the town has recently completed a renovation, with lovely sidewalks, antique street lights, each with a large pot (oh, no–I said “pot”) beside it, and a refurbished flagpole in the center of town. Watch for shops and storefronts to come.

    20. Jöe Says:

      THAT SO DOPE!!

that looks like a fuckin’ jay son.

    21. heidi Says:

hey! im at working being bored googling random things and i came across this website. my husband and are are from the town you took this picture in. good ol’ hamburg, iowa. im glad y’all get a chuckle out of this. enjoy….

    22. Julie Says:

My older sister(Dr. Sandra Dankof Dirks) started working at the fountain in Stoners when she was 15. She graduated high school in 1980 and went on to become a pharmacist then a college professor teaching pharmacy now she makes over 100,000 a year traveling around the world for Johnson and Johnson promoting pharmicuticals so for the record this town obviously has more to offer than just a place to pee. No need to put our town down just because of a name a of a store and if your gonna go to all of the trouble of designing a web page you could have at least remembered the town you were in when you seen it.

    23. Eric Says:

      Julie,
No one likes run on sentences.

    24. JR Says:

There is several Stoner Drug locations.

Rock Port, Mo (not the one in the picture)
      Tabor, IA
Hamburg, IA (I think it might be this one)

      and a couple others.

It’s also named after the last name of the guy who started it.

    25. Josh L Says:

I work for a company that is a DME provider and came across this place searching for DME’s in Iowa and was laughing about it before I even called. I work out of Florida and when I actually did call this place the guy who answered the phone busts out laughing in the middle of saying- Stoner Drug and then I just lost it too. I was literally in tears laughing at my desk. That phone call just made my day..Thanks Stoner Drug! still lmao

    26. James H. Says:

Funny isnt it, I grew up in Tabor, IA. I always got a kick walking uptown and going past stoner drug. You got to realize that Stoner Drug is and old drug store, back then stoner didnt mean what it does today.

    27. Mikelle H. Says:

I grew up in Tabor, Iowa and have 2 shirts from stoner drug. Its pretty much the most interesting thing we have….James H…..is the hume? i think i know you!

    28. Jeanne Says:

I worked at the soda fountain in the Stoner Drug in Hamburg Ia from 1973-1976 while in High School. Nice people, nice town, great soda fountain. It was the gathering place for farmers, homemakers, and high school/jr high students. It’s named after original owner, last name was Stoner. Marvin and Toots (toots dad was the original owner) were great people, and Marge was a sweetheart and my grandmothers best friend. Fond memories of that place.

    29. Mary Lynn Says:

So…2010 and the STONER DRUG comments still trickle in! We will be heading back to Hamburg in August. Looking forward to seeing the town and all the wonderful people who still live there, as well as any who are making the trek back to the ‘burg!
