Thought I’d post a preview of my lecture. Iíll be doing a quick history of who we are, as well as showing a couple of case studies. Oh yeah, and lots of posters. And some good Q & A. Hope to see you on Thursday.

People keep asking me about it…i think people are excited to hear you speak… : )

I’m super excited. I’m going to be showing some brand new work and I think some of the process will is very revealing, and I hope fun too. Plus, it’s been really hectic here and I’m looking forward to a change of pace. Aren’t you Thinkmule? How do you know Nate Williams? I guess I can ask you in person in a few days.

My wife loves the cat with the handbag. I assume it is for an art fundraiser. I guess we will have to wait until the presentation to get all of the details.

Hey Bennett I just realized that there’s a pretty strong cute animal theme to my post, and an even stronger cat (not to mention butt) theme. Okay, that is strange! Would you believe that I had other images that wouldn’t go through for some reason? The Artwalk poster is brand new, it’s actually at the printers right now. Her arms/scarf are moth wings in case you were wondering, It’s the 10 year anniversary, and the event takes place in the neighborhood where we live and work. The client is pretty laid back and lets us do what we want. That’s the best kind of client, no?

Bennett said:

Very funny! I just assumed that you were going to have a dog and cat themed presentation.

I’ve heard rumors that clients like this exist. Maybe someday I will experience this phenomenon.

I thought the arms were some sort of wings. They work perfectly.

Okay, so I just sent a couple of additional images to counter balance the cute animal theme. Hopefully you have room to post them.

Bennett said:

The additional images (sans cute animals) are now uploaded. We always have room for you.

With the name, Modern Dog, and all the cat and dog images, I was thinking all your clients were pet related. Good to see that’s not the case. I love the posters. I wish I still lived in Nebraska so I could attend your lecture. If I were there, I would ask you about your relationship with your screenprinter. Who prints your posters? What quantities do you usually print? Who puts the posters up, and where? Do you have any advice on how to sell more traditional clients on the idea of making a series of posters like these? Do you get free tickets to the concerts you promote? What kind of music are you listening to. OK, I better stop asking questions. Thanks for giving us a sneak preview, and have a good talk.

I wanted to take a moment and respond to the poster questions from Adrian, but I’m on my way to the airport now. I’ll have my computer with me so I’ll compose a thoughtful response and try to find airport access to post it. Stay tuned.

Hey, guess what? I posting this from The Mill in Lincoln. Good coffee too.

Who prints your posters? Weíve been using the same guy for many years in Seattle. He recently (last 2/3 years) opened his own shop up called Clone Press. It would be difficult to imagine printing with anyone else.

What quantities do you usually print? It depends. Anywhere from 75 to 200 is typical. Bu we donít like parting with our posters ñ hence the low print run - and rarely offer them for sale.

Who puts the posters up, and where? We just make sure the venue gets the posters, and then leave it to them. Weíve seen them up at clubs, record stores and coffee shops.

Do you have any advice on how to sell more traditional clients on the idea of making a series of posters like these? This is a difficult question to answer because every client is handled in a unique way, and it really depends on the clients industry. One good point to make is that if the poster is 2 ñ 3 colors with a small print run, it will be more cost effective than offset, and probably competes with digital pricing too. Another point you can make is that screnn printed posters feel more hand done or ìspecialî because of how the ink sits on the paper. If that makes sense to them, the process can sell itself.

Specifically with our gig posters, we wonít do them unless we get to do them our way ñ usually we insist that the poster is screenprinted. Because music posters are generally low pay, weíll tell the client theyíll get our heart and soul, but they wonít be art directing us.

Do you get free tickets to the concerts you promote? Thatís the best part!

What kind of music are you listening to I like a wide variety of stuff. Right now I canít seem to get Luna off my stereo.

Great questions/great answers.

Can’t wait for the lecture.

They have wireless internet at The Mill, now? Cool!

Thanks for answering all my questions! I’m still dissapointed that I can’t attend your lecture. If you happen to be giving away any posters, give an extra one to Bennett to give to me! I really enjoy your work…

I’m back at work and just wanted to drop by and let you all know I had a great time. I’m sure that many of our paths will cross again.

AR: Hope the Victoria’s ice cream girl makes a reappearance someday :)

Ooops, I meant Gelato Girl!

Robynne,

Thank you again, and I’m glad you had a good time. I really appreciated the diversity and sheer quantity of work that you showed us. Maybe we can get you to post some of your college work some day.
