Time crunch! I must say that I loved Bennett’s new direction and incorporation of the tree-rings. So obvious I almost slapped myself for missing it. That boded well for me, as I found myself in an unavoidable time crunch for round five.
I know Bennett will kill me for introducing tight trapping into our letterpress project, but hierarchy begged for a few of these changes. First I added more explanatory copy (stretched type will, again, be set in metal type in the final) and moved the block of text to connect with the above images, eliminating the two-halves of the poster and creating more of a cohesive whole.
Then I started playing with line weights and color. I’m not expecting perfect trapping on the upper right, but we needed to tie the images to the copy with more strength. I feel we’ve achieved that now. I love the slightly-unfinished (by modern printing standards) of the letterpress, and if our registration falls slightly off when Bennett and I print these, that will just add to, and speak of, the beauty of the process.
Now it’s time for you, the loyal readers, to vehemently state your opinions. Where have all the harsh critiques gone? Are there any professors out there who still tear work off the walls when its not good enough? As we approach the final rounds of DesignOff! 2005, we desire your feedback.

Aligning the ‘365’ with the time and date looks nice but the interaction between the three and the tree slice looks bad. The alignment is enough to solidify the design.

I wish I could do a better Winter Sorbeck impression, but I just can’t bring myself too. A couple thoughts, though…
I wonder if there is a way to simplify this more. The illustrations are a little distracting to me. I can’t read the callouts, but it seems a little confusing that they are away from the illustrations. Maybe there is some redundancy there that could be improved. I like that it says “Year in Design” now. The number arrangement is confusing, but with the addition of the tagline the 365 and 25 can just be design elements.
Here is an idea. What if you removed all the illustrations and pushed it to the extreme of simplicity. Just have the log and a ring. Then below you have a headline like “the year in design” followed by all the text. The letterpressed log texture might be enough to carry the poster.
…Or you could just take a crap in a box and call it art. (Cheese Monkeys humor, I apologize.)

Adrian, didn’t you read the rules? they can’t remove an element once it’s been introduced. I do agree that it needs more simplicity. There is a lot yelling at me right now.
Changes I love: the dots to connect the rings with the lines and the chick in orange (moves your eye around the piece more).
Changes I hate: all the text running together (looks like too much to read) and the random overlapping of color (if your going to do it, then really do it, otherwise don’t)
I also think the 3 is getting overplayed. it’s the first thing I see and I don’t think that it should be.
how was that, tough enough?
