This Fall, AIGA Nebraska will play host to the traveling exhibition of 365: AIGA YEAR IN DESIGN 25, a gallery show of the award-winning design work of last year. As is customary with most AIGA chapters, we will be sending a poster-invitation to announce this event. Normally the event-chairman (me) works with the co-chair (in this case, Be A Design Group co-founder Bennett Holzworth) to develop a concept and one of the two designers handles the artwork.

But we’re going to handle this in a slightly different, more amalgamous manner. Announcing the 2005 DesignOff!

In the spirit of true collaboration, Bennett and I will be passing this project off to each other every 48 hours for the next three weeks. The timeline would normally be quicker but we are not able to work on the project during office hours, so we’ve budgeted hours accordingly. In the end it should be a very quick, honest, do-it-once-and-do-it-right kind of design project. The rules are below:

DesignOff! Rules of Engagement
Nate will begin the design. Bennett will end it.

The poster MUST convey the following information when it is finished:
墜「 “AIGA Nebraska”
墜「 “365: AIGA Year in Design 25”
墜「 “Annual Gallery Show”
墜「 “Friday, September 9, 2005”
墜「 “Location and time” (as of yet To Be Finalized)

Designers may:
墜「 Add
墜「 Reposition
墜「 Rearrange
墜「 Resize
墜「 Tweak
墜「 Degrade
墜「 Clarify
墜「 Mystify
墜「 Rewrite
墜「 Write
墜「 Emphasize
墜「 Colorize
墜「 Change
墜「 Alter
墜「 etcetera

Designers may not:
墜「 Delete
墜「 Cancel out the other designer’s changes (ie: go back to what you had before)

Specifics:
墜「 12” x 18”
墜「 no bleed
墜「 up to 3 spot-color

The design will begin when Nate sends Bennett the first draft at high noon on Tuesday, June 21 and end when Bennett sends the final design to Nate on Tuesday, July 5. Designers will have no more than 48 hours each round to turn in their drafts to the other designer (4 rounds each).

The final poster will receive a limited-edition letterpress run as well as a much larger print-run based on the letterpress version. We’ll be posting each round along with our comments as they come in. Stay tuned!

Round One:
With the process as it is, I was hesitant to nail down too many specifics this early in the game. What I wanted to do was feature the work that would be on display in some way. As such, I have developed a collage of excepts of pieces that will be on-hand to recreate the experience of being at the exhibit. Just snippets of things pulled together in the viewer’s visual memory with the information typeset beneath the AIGA logo.

I’m looking forward to seeing the project evolve over the timeframe. Someone had better add in the AIGA Nebraska web address though (I’d be a terrible chapter Web Director if I didn’t make sure that the URL was there).
