DesignOff! 2005 Round Two
by Bennett Holzworth, (8 comments)

After being blindsided Tuesday morning with the actual timeline and specifics of this project (not to mention the idea of posting it here), I think I will now embrace this challenge. See round one for the rules.
The finished design will be letterpressed on a 12X18 Chandler & Price. The light blue is representative of the color of the paper. The circular shapes in the background are growth rings in a tree stump or branch. That is where it gets tricky. I’m not sure if this is possible. I am tapping all of my resources to see if it is possible to get cross sections of different branches to be type high and get the growth rings to actually print on press. The growth rings represent a year (i.e. 365 days).
Please ignore all of the stretching and distorting of the type. I am trying to emulate the wood type that I have and so I tried to represent them with digital type. The size and proportion should be fairly accurate. So I guess that means you can’t resize the text, Nate.
I ran out of time to set the information below the AIGA logo. I think we should get a cut made for the smaller type and not try to set it by hand. Stayed tuned for Nate’s revisions that are due by Saturday Noon.

Thank you sir, I will change whatever types sizes I please.
The tree branches are interesting. What’s more interesting is that we now have two concepts in the kitchen, and there’s only room in for one.
Must 墜カ not 墜カ over 墜カ complicate 墜カ message!

Go ahead and change the type sizes, but good luck tracking down the correct size wood type.
Who said you can only have one concept in a design? That’s not in the rules. The rings will just show up as a background texture. See it as a secondary story within the main story.

Love Bennett’s ideas. This is going to be good!
Who would of thought the king of texture would be opposed to a secondary image. Guess your going to have to do a really good job at emphasizing the primary image. Good Luck!

I am trying to get my head around the technical aspect of what you are going to do. How many colors are you expecting to print? So you are going to hand set the type, and get plates made for the image, right?
I hope you guys keep arguing, err I mean discussing your thoughts as you work. Collaborating on a painting or drawing seems like it would be easier than two designers working on the same poster design. This should be interesting. I like it so far…

Up to 3 spot colors. The rest you’ve pretty much got right (or at least the way we’re thinking of handling it presently). I’m trying to limit my own comments to my next post (Saturday at 12:00!), so I don’t want to get too deep into it now. But please, feel free to contribute, everyone.

Here is what I was thinking for the letterpress printing.
3 Colors, One for the branch/growth rings, one for the orange and one for the black.
The growth rings would be actual cross sections of trees and branches. The large type would be from actual wood type. Nate’s illustration, the AIGA logo and all of the small text would be cuts made from a place in Iowa. They are magnesium plates mounted on wood to be type high.

“tapping all of my resources” … nice.
Interesting collaboration.
