Don't Update Your iPod!
by Bennett Holzworth, (18 comments)
I have a 10 gig, third generation iPod and I recently ran the iPod updater. Very soon after, my iPod is out of commission.
A co-worker of mine had the same problem with her fourth generation iPod. I posted my problem on the Apple forum and two people have already agreed that they have had similar experiences. No one has posted a solution yet. I am assuming at this point this isn’t just a coincidence. If you haven’t updated your iPod yet, I would recommend waiting until Apple has addressed this problem. Hopefully someone will figure out a solution soon. You can follow the progress of my post here.
I know this has nothing do with design, except that we designers love our iPods and Apple is one of the biggest proponents of design. Hopefully Apple will design … errr … program their way out of this mess.

Same thing happended with my 60gb iphoto. Right after i updated, i lost all my music…but only my music, everything else was still there. I’ve heard of really strange things happening with all models and generations of ipods, and to my knowledge, apple has nothing in place that will reimburce you for your lost info, not even with applecare.
Another thing that i’m dissapointed about (with the whole ipod/itunes craze) is the fact that i can’t even burn a CD with a song on it that is purchased from itunes…what a jip. It just creates a blank track and it’s getting really annoying. Damned copyright.

Man, that stinks. I have a third generation iPod and I had to update my iPod when I upgraded to the new iTunes. I didn’t have any problems, though. That was the first time I used an iPod updater, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I should be getting my $50 Apple credit from the battery settlement one of these days. I couldn’t go a day without my iPod. Maybe it will take another lawsuit for you guys to be reimbursed for this problem.

I have a first generation ipod that I have updated a dozens of times with no problems. This maybe an obvious one, but don’t delete or move your mp3 files on your HD between updates. If the path is broken, your library gets screwed up. Also if you buy a song from itunes, import as mp3 in the settings and then you can burn songs to a CD all day long.

Well EIJ - that was the even crappier part. I didn’t have enough room on my comp hard drive for my 30 gb of music, so i was using the ipod as a sort of external hard drive.
Thanks for the itunes tip, i’ll give that a try. i guess i never really looked into fixing the problem. i must just enjoy complaining. GOOD CALL.

Diamondrat72, I wish I knew how to help you.
I finally gave up trying to fix my 3G iPod. Maybe it was the update or maybe it was just a coincidence. Who knows. It could have been a defective hard drive.
So what do I do about a company that frustrates me like Apple? I go out and buy a new 60 gig iPod with video. I’m a total sucker. And what does Apple do in return? They make me mad again. I had already come to the conclusion, that I would have to buy all new accessories, since all of my old ones were rendered obsolete by Apple’s “improvements”. New iTrip, new case, new car charger (to work with the new iTrip), new AV cable. Then I realize they have abandoned their own technology and old customers, by not supporting Firewire at all. So I drop another $30 on a USB 2.0 card and put it in the old G4. It works great until about 10 gigs and then freezes my iTunes. If the product would only work as smooth as it looks. At least it is still under warranty. Sign me up for replacing this one in a year and half when this one breaks. 7G iPod?
And Nate … I don’t even want to hear your “stop complaining” comments. Even “just buy a new one Nate” has to vent every once in a while.

to michael neilsen… I know this is probably way too late to be saying, but you absolutely can burn a cd with itunes purchased tracks. if you’re computer is creating blank tracks, there’s some bug in your set up. but itunes drm allows tracks to be burned to unlimited cd’s. the restriction is in how many times a playlist containing the tracks can be burned (5 times, last i checked). I burn itunes purchased tracks all the time with zero problems.

Sorry to hear the USB 2.0 card I recommended to you didn’t work, Bennett. Talk about egg on my face.
Like you, I resisted the urging of a couple of buddies to just buy a new computer, which is ridiculous when my current one is fine (especially when, like you, I’d just bought a 60GB video iPod); I installed that card in my old G4 tower and it works like a charm.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that the accessories don’t work anymore. (Well, to be fair the old dock still works even though they say it won’t, but if you have an iTrip good luck, the connectors changed. And while the old car charger will still work, the new iTrip uses the same plug so you can’t use both concurrently. Clearly I needn’t admonish you to “not get me started”; I’ve just gotten all riled up on my own!)

Tom, I don’t think it was your recommendation that was faulty. I think it is my iPod in particular.
