iPod Video Announced.

Today, Apple has unveiled its newest (yes, even newer than the nano) iPod: The iPod Video. From apple.com:
“Time for the world’s best music player to take the stage for another encore. In 30GB and 60GB models that hold up to 15,000 songs, full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos, the new iPod makes the most of your music and more. Yeah, you’ve heard that tune before. Only now, you can watch it, too. With support for up to 150 hours of video and a 2.5-inch color display, the new iPod lets you take music videos and TV shows on the road.”
BeADesignGroup will update with more information as it becomes available. ‘Till then, we suggest talking about how much you want one.

I’m still rockin’ it with my first generation 10GB iPod and my wife has my original 5 GB!
I’m more impressed with the Nano for its small size.
Does anyone really want to watch video on a 2.5″ screen?

Watching video is okay on my PSP but not enough to shell out the same price as a DVD.
The iPod with it’s smaller non-widescreen display certainly isn’t tempting me for watching video. Then I heard it has TV out but who wants to watch 320×240 resolution video on a 32″+ TV?
Apple are treding a thin line here. The iPod did the job of taking music with you very well but as they expand into other functionality they’re going to meet other devices that already do a much better job.

What about the iTunes Video Store?
The ability to purchase single episodes of a TV show is a big deal. On-demand, uninterrupted television will absolutely change the way TV is used by advertisers. The studios are still making money, but where will advertisers go? HBO and TiVo asked this question, but now an answer seems more imperative.
I see the shoehorned iPod Video as a hold-over. This is only going to get bigger.

I like the idea of the iPod Video, but it’s not there for me yet. Why can’t you buy entire movies from iTunes? I take it that Apple has had less success in convincing Hollywood to go downloadable. The home movies would be nice, but I would like to take my movies where ever I want and play them through an RCA hookup. I assume that is how the TV out works. I don’t know if this makes a difference but the Apple site says “MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480″ That seems to be a little better than 320×240, or am I readying the tech specs wrong? Either way, it seems to still be way to small for watching a movie on your TV. Maybe it is just the first step.

This is definitely Step One. It is only a matter of time, probably less then we think, before you can purchase feature films on iTunes. However, considering DVDs usually run between $15 to $30 and come loaded with bonus content, that industry may be reluctant to drop to Apple’s lower price point. Once that issue is resolved, you can bet on seeing Toy Story available on iTunes almost immediately.
