It's Comcastic!

During FOX’s coverage of the baseball playoffs, in between being completely despondant over those dorks from Chicago winning the American League pennant, I’ve continually seen these new ads for Comcast Cable that, quite frankly, are friggin’ sweet. (And in the immortal words of the dad from Family Guy, “Don’t ever be afraid to be friggin’ sweet.”)
Years and years ago, when I would be sick from school and stay home, I would love watching game shows. Classic Concentration. Sale of the Century. Tic Tac Dough. Price Is Right. And of course, Dick Clark’s $10,000 Pyramid.
Pyramid was such a great show. You pair up a celebrity with a contestant, they feed clues to each other, and try to guess a series of words. In the bonus round, the rules changed slightly to where instead of being able to describe a word, you had to simply list examples of the word or phrase. Tough stuff. That’s why you always saw the same celebrities over and over again — not everyone is smart or quick enough to be able to play the show well. (As Joey Tribbiani showed so hilariously on the Friends episode where he guests on the new Pyramid hosted by Donny Osmond.)
In Comcast’s new ads from Method Studios in Santa Monica, vintage footage from a Pyramid bonus round with overdubbed audio is used to describe their service. I could be wrong, but it looks like the celebrity giving out the clues in the ad is none other than Loretta Swit, who played Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on MASH. Here’s the cleverly written clues:
“High Definition. Amazing Picture Quality.” Of course, “Things That Are Good”.
“Price of Internet. Faster Downloads.” The answer is “Things That Are Great”.
“Warts. Satellite Dishes.” Rightly, the contestant guesses “Things That Should Be Removed”.
“A free library of On-Demand movies.” Quick and excitedly, the contestant answers “Things You’d Give Your Right Arm For”.
“HDTV. High Speed Internet. Free On Demand movies.” And the contestant almost jumps out of his chair, exclaiming “Things That Are Comcastic!”
While I’ve talked to a lot of people of people who absolutely abhorr this ad, I’m not one of them. (One guy at a house party this weekend hated it so much, he told me he thought it was “Craptastic”. I told him quite nicely that I did not agree. And then accidentally spilled my beverage on him. These things happen.)
Of all the new ads debuted during these baseball playoffs, this is easily the best. But don’t take my word for it. Go look at it for yourself, and form your own opinion. I promise not to spill a virtual beverage on you if you disagree with me…honest!

Tom-Tom Club,
When Bennett and I saw this commercial I immediately exclaimed, “It is like… if Tom made commercials!” LOVE that you posted about this….

It’s a fantastic commercial. Although I take serious issue with your swipe at the Sox. (And as for game shows, my favorite was always Scrabble, because you had the best sound effects and those nice little squares that fit into that slot. Something about that was very reassuring.)

I have to agree…in spite of the fact I’m no fan of Comcast, I laugh at these. The beauty of it is that it is not a re-creation or re-interpretation of the set with actors wearing retro clothes…it’s an actual re-broadcast, replete with terrible dubbing (which only makes it funnier).

Haven’t seen the ads, but I share your assesment of the Whitesox Tom. Aside from Paul Konerko and Jose Contreras, the best thing about the Whitesox is that their not the Marlins.

I share your thoughts as well. Its nice to see a little wit and a good concept go a long way. It will be interesting to see if its a series of commercials or not. And to see if it can hold up.

I agree. I loved this commercial as well. Very timely and trendy. It reminded me of an Old Navy ad. Speaking of good Ads, how about the credits that roll in for the new FOX show Prison Break. I love the text flying in with the barbed wire. Very Saul bass. Design Dump www.designdump.com Get dumped on!

The commercial was great. And I think I saw you on TV in the stands, in Anaheim or LA or do they just have an identity crisis. I’m pretty sure you were the geek with that stupid “rally monkey”. Does every Angel fan carry around a stuffed monkey?

Tom, that’s great! Even though Comcast isn’t anywhere near my area, I still enjoyed watching the commercial—thanks for the link.
