Intel Leaps Into 1999 with New Logo

Continuing the story Bennett touched on a few weeks back. Apple will be launching a slew of announcements, including their new Intel-based power macs, at the MacWorld Expo on January 10. Apparently, this seems like the perfect time for Intel to drop into a full-on logo redesign to take advantage of all the new publicity they’re going to get.

I’ve been looking online—and looking hard—because I just can’t believe this is a new logo (I confess that I don’t pay any attention to Intel). But everytime I go to Intel.com, they have their “sunken e” logo. The same one that they’ve always had. What we’re getting here is a solid basline for the text and an offical play off of their “Intel Inside” marker-swoosh, into a full-on mellenium-swoosh.

Don’t these people pay attention to anything? How long can company after company churn out the exact same logo? More so than any other millennium-swoosh logo, this one actually feels like it was designed 7 years ago. It wouldn’t be so bad, really, except that it is the perfect physical embodiment of every design cliché from 1999. (no, 3D really hit big a year or two later)

This news is trickling out from an internet leak that focuses mainly on Intel’s new processor plan. Expect the official announcement in a week to 10 days.

The logo “Redesign” image above looks like a much needed update to the sticker that is placed on computers with intel chips. The old version is the “Intel Inside” inside of a blue swoosh. While I agree that the redesign is rather cliche 1999, it is a much needed update for the sticker upcoming Mac Launches.

Below is a more appropriate representation

Well, certainly the sticker is being reformatted to handle the new identity mark, but it is the mark itself that is damanding the change. Check Bennett’s post (link in the first paragraph) for the logo solo.

Well, the logo now says “Intel Inside” with one fewer word. You can’t really argue with the benefits of that (one logo instead of two “Intel” vs “Intel Inside”, etc). But it is still a clichéd swoosh, which is never a good thing. It certainly makes infinitely more sense than the previous wordmark and “Intel Inside” logo.

Whatever they do, I hope Apple has it in the agreement that the Intel logo will not appear on their upcoming hardware. I think Apple would be the sole manufacturer that didn’t have to include the Intel Inside logo on their machines. There is nothing that would look as out of place as that horrible Intel swoosh on the clean design that is indicative of Apple hardware.

I’d put it at 60-40 the Intel logo WILL be on the new MacIntels’ case. The marketing cash Intel pays computer companies to slap that on there is awfully hard to say no to, particularly for someone like Apple who will undoubtedly have a slew of commercials promoting the switch…of course, a razor blade would remove that bit of “logo creep” easy enough.

I wouldn’t bet against the two-second “Intel Inside” video logo appearing at the end of all Apple TV spots either. I would bet even money that happens too. Again, hard to say no to the CoOp money.

I worry about the inclusion of the logo on new Mac products, but Apple has always put product design above sales figures, so I don’t see it as an inevitability.

Regarding the new logo, while the swoosh in itself is now a graphic cliché, I don’t think it was when they first introduced it. They have recognition in that swoosh, hence I don’t find it as horrifying. I think the whole thing is a nice update and serves a strategic purpose.

Millenium Swoosh! Yippeeeeee!

I really doubt that they will be updating their powerbooks in January… though those rumors are leaking out. With most of the major pro apps not being ported yet… they would have to run in the Rosetta environment, therefore dropping their performance. I would instead expect Mac Mini and the new 13” iBook and iBook slim.

Man… that swoosh has no business on my new MacIntel Powerbook!

The update seems like a swoosh to me, whereas earlier versions seemed like a ring. Like how you’d highlight/circle something important on a sticky-note to-do list. The semi-meaningful ring of the previous version Logan showed isn’t as bad as the meaningless swoosh of the current version.

Little off topic but heres an interesting video about screen fonts and how they are designed. Not sure if this was mentioned before.

Nate, any newly-redesigned logos that you do appreciate? All this negativity is bumming me out, man.

Nate Voss said:

Joe.

Go to Sprint.com and check it out in all it’s majesty. Now that’s a redesign love-story. And don’t burn out, man. If you burn out, what hope it there for the rest of us who don’t screenprint awesome things just as a hobby?

Nate Voss said:

Okay.

Intel’s new tagline is “Leap Ahead.” I swear I didn’t know that when I wrote the headline to this article. That is too funny.

JonSel said:

Apparently, by “leap”, they meant how you’ll need to read the headlines. “It’s a Leap Year” looks like it was set by a blind man. Even Pagemaker 1.0 didn’t have letterspacing problems like that. It’s deplorable. (See the new website and logo here.)

Bennett said:

JonSel, I think we could get better letterspacing using our wood and metal type. Even on the the “Y” and “e” pair.

shannon said:

yes, the swoosh is old and yes, it’s cliche. at least the thing isn’t ugly.

how about this redesign though: Kodak

Bennett said:

I can’t find the Intel logo anywhere on the just released Macs. Actually, I don’t even see it on the Apple website. Even the “intel Core Duo” icon appears to be set in Apple’s own Myriad.
