Logo New(s) 4

Intel, The Red Crystal, Indian Airlines, Yeshiva University, Rugby Football League, Melbourne Cricket Ground …
There is a rumor floating around that Intel will be getting a rebrand in the near future. Future Brand is rumored to be working on this new identity. Indentityworks.com shares the above logo that has apparently appeared in other countries. If my research is correct the current Intel logo was created by Landor. There are some other great new identities featured on Identityworks.com. I am liking the Ahlstrom mark.

Here is some fascinating news about the symbols that could and do save many lives. The Red Cross and Red Crescent are protected by the Geneva convention in war. For understandable reasons Israel will not use them. Israel’s national symbol, the Star of David (currently used on their emergency vehicles), is not looked upon too highly in surrounding countries. The Red Crystal is soon to be added to the list and Israel is getting on board. Link via Logo Lounge

Here are a couple sports logos that those of us in The States might not encounter. I would like to hear from our readers across the seas wether these new marks were a big deal. I assume the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) and RFL (Rugby Football League) are national equivalents to our MLB and NFL.

Indian Airlines gets changed to just Indian.

Yeshiva University is getting some flack for their new logo. They replaced the traditional jewish text for the new tagline “Bring Wisdom to Life”. A good reminder that tradition is a good thing to consider when rebranding a company or institution. There has been an online petition to put “Torah u-Madda” (Torah and knowledge) back into the logo but only 22 have signed it so far. There are some interesting comments in the petition thus far. One reads, “Torah u-Madda is an essential part of who we are. To remove those words is to deny our identity.”
No Paul Rand or Saul Bass redesigns in this post, but some interesting new logos none-the-less. While I don’t feel that any of these marks are earth shattering, it is always helpful to know what is happening in the world of identity design and branding. One thing is for certain. I always enjoy the feedback on these logo posts.

I think the RFL mark has some potential. I think it could have been drawn better, and the relationship with the type is lazy, but I do really like the hand/stitches concept.
MCG is just terrible. Gradients for no purpose. What are the blue lines supposed to be, bleachers? The letters are simple enough, but they don’t mesh with all the other roundness. Not well executed.

JonSel, I was thinking some of the same things, but didn’t really verbalize it. Along the lines of the RFL logo, it is hard to imagine a US sports league going with something so flat and almost delicate. The mark is alright, but to me it doesn’t symbolize the rough and tough image of rubgy. Maybe I just need to see it in use. Here is another article I found on the logo.
I think the “red crystal” does have some implications for identity design and different cultures. The fact that the governing bodies showed such a restraint in terms of allowing new symbols for relief vehicles and workers, is very good. It shows that they understand the power of consistency and simplicity especially when it comes to the confusing times of war.

Just a bit about the MCG. The MCG is a stadium in Melbourne, Australia. It has a capacity of approx. 110 000, and is home the Australian Rules Football, and Cricket.
I believe that the logo has just been redesigned, to coincide with the completion of the ground redevelopment.
Personally I think that the logo is amaturish to say the least. The colour scheme seems to have to meaning, except for the green suposedly representing the grass on the field.
The type used does not fit with either the rest of the logo, nor the feel of the MCG.
The MCG is about history, and big events. This does not do it justice.
