  • Hey buddy got a quarter (design)

    USMint.jpg

As a currently displaced US citizen, I’ve missed most of the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters® Program. I tried to catch a few of the new designs over the holidays, and was overwhelmed by all the new-to-me quarters. Now I see the State of Washington is gearing up for the final selection of their state quarter. It’s an interesting process, that according to the US Mint, is a collaboration between the governor’s of each state, the US Mint and its designers.

It appears that each governor can choose how to involve the public in developing and submitting concepts. It is also up to the Governor’s discretion how the final designs, produced by the US Mint designers, are evaluated and recommended by the public. According to the Seattle Times, Washingtonians will be voting on which of three coins to recommend in the spring. I’ll be voting for the Orca design.

For a bit of comic relief, check out the Times’ collection of reader-submitted designs.

Those reader-submitted designs were fascinating and hilarious. I like the one with Microsoft on the quarter, or maybe Mt. St. Helens exploding.

I haven’t followed the other Quarter designs very closely, but I would think the Ocra would stand out from the rest. It would be refreshing to see something simple and graphic on a quarter. Down with the montage.
