If Microsoft Redesigned the iPod Packaging
by Adrian Hanft, (7 comments)

This movie is too funny not to to share with the group. It is a video of what would happen if Microsoft were to redesign the packaging of the iPod. It is worth it just to read the client feedback throughout the video. Gems like, “Let’s make better use of this space” are so funny it hurts.
(If you have trouble seeing the video, that is because it got dugg. You might be able to find an alternative link over at Digg, though.)

There is a version up on youtube.com but it’s just not quite as good, resolution-wise. Worth it either way.

Is this old? If it’s not, I wonder why they used the packaging from the original iPod. It would be more relevant with newer packaging. Entertaining none-the-less.
This totally reminds me of a mock redesign in Communication Arts of the VW Think Small campaign. I think it might have been reprinted in the 40th anniversary issue. It is the exact same setup, without the motion and the sound. “Start with something simple and beautiful and clutter it up until it looks like everything else out there.”

The video’s great. Kindofa worst-case-scenario for what might happen if you were to always say “yes” to the requests of some clients.

i think they used the original packaging because it implies that microsoft is always a few years behind stealing other ideas.

Not sure if this is old news by now, but apparently Microsoft created the iPod packaging parody for internal use:
