Stock Photo Clichés

Browsing through stock photo sites ranks right up there with going to the dentist for me. Every time I use one a little piece of me dies. But on a lighter note, check out Forty Media’s list of the top ten Stock Photo Clichés. How many times have you seen the “The Handshake of Synergy” the “The Romantic Glow of the Laptop” or the always appropriate “Telecommuting from the Edge.” So true. So sad.

Those are hilarious and very true. I find the metaphorical images the worst though. Anything with a gear or the sands of time has got to go.

Awesome. Except they totally forgot the ubiquitous (and utterly useless) “Naked Pregnant Woman” shot.

So, so true! I had to work very hard to convince my client not to use number 1, the “‘seal the deal’ handshake”. He was like “but this image speaks so much to the audience, it’s what this ad is all about, and I tried to explain “yah, but how is it different from anyone else’s advertising?” Finally, I ended up doing a bad design (just couldn’t work that photo in) and proved that we needed to do our own photo shoot. What a relief!
