Be A Design Cast 25 : Debbie Millman (Season Finale)

Welcome to the Season Finale of the Be A Design Cast! We are head-over-heels to bring you a half-hour conversation with the one-and-only Debbie Millman of Design Matters. If you’re not aware of Design Matters, have been living under a rock, or are not a graphic designer, it is only the premier graphic-design/business talk show and both Donovan and I were terribly humbled to have her in-studio with us. Fly on over to iTunes to download every episode of her show and the first 5 minutes of today’s podcast will make a whole lot more sense to you. Debbie was kind enough to discuss the advent of the millennium swoosh (Nike beat her to it), the Quark/Sterling/SAC logo fiasco, Design Matters and its origins, and much, much more. Plus, for the first time in show history, her student tip actually left me speechless. A big thanks to our good friend Debbie and to all of you who listen. We’ll see you in January!

Here’s an idea:
A series of shows showcasing freelance designers of notable stature. Have them compare working in-house/agency and freelance. Its advantages and pitfalls. How do they attract clients? What are the financial implications. Risk/reward?
My two cents!

Good work.
I have included BADG and Design Matters in my talk at the AIGA design education conference… Design Frontier.
The talk is called Inspiration Anywhere!
INSPIRATION :: Anywhere
It is for students to connect with the contemporary world of design. Good work guys. I hope you are going to continue. When does the next season start?

Thanks Bill, we saw that just this morning. Nice site.
To clear up any confusion, the show will definitely continue. We are scheduled for a tentative “Mid January” and as we get closer to Season 2 we’ll definitely let everyone know. We’re also planning an update to http://www.beadesigncast.com to offer a more robust experience, so keep an eye out in that direction, too.

Following Bill’s lead in linking the Cast with educational opportunities, I might toss a couple of votes into the ring for some design / illustration speakers who could talk particularly about design education and their classroom work:
1. Ellen Lupton
2. Katherine McCoy
3. Elliot Peter Earls
4. Christoph Niemann
5. Rick Valicenti
6. Sean Adams
7. Jeffrey Keedy
On the other half of my Christmas podcast wishlist I’d love to hear a show or two that really focused on the work of typographers and font designers:
1. House Industries /
Ken Barber and Ben Kiel
2. Hoefler Type Foundry /
Jonathon Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones
3. Chank Co. / Chank Diesel
4. Zuzana Licko
5. Elliot Peter Earls
6. Jonathan Barnbrook
7. Fountain Foundry / Peter Bruhn
Just some random thoughts floating around on a chilly December afternoon…

What happened to Tom Nemitz? I miss his humor and commentary added to the great voices of the BADcast. More Tom in season 2.

I agree with Aaron. Get Tom back. Who cares what happened. His humor and style is missed.
