Quicklink: Before N' After in Photoshop
by Nate Voss, (10 comments)
Ever since the Dove Campaign For Real Beauty I have become more and more fascinated with the lengths people actually go to when photoshopping women. This professional’s site delves into before and afters that are worth a look. Only one bikini photo, I promise.
Commentary? While I find it sad we go to these lengths, as a professional there’s part of me that wants to know how to do it.

Of course, that is the one that you picked.

A friend of mine… Evan Roth of Ni9e did this project about photoshopping images for beauty. It averages the before and after image so you can see what has changed… great stuff.

this is something that excites me and makes me cringe all at once. currently doing a lot of work for realtors (who LOVE having their pictures on everything) i am often asked to retouch photos. of course, i have no problem doing so but at the same time i am torn. i love these before and after shots, showing all that is changed in photos before we see the perfected, final versions on ads and in catalogs. as a female, it makes me feel a little bit better about myself to know that the models aren’t as perfect as they seem. this doesn’t, on the other hand, stop me or most women from continuing to strive for this perfection. i don’t know how many people have jokingly asked me to “photoshop” them in real life.
while i have great respect for dove’s campaign trying to push real beauty, even they aren’t true to form as we see above. we live in this society that pushes such an unrealistic version of beauty no wonder the young starlets starve themselves into nothingness. not that i’m excusing the likes of linday lohan and company, it just filters down to the rest of the population and from watching it at a personal level it’s a long road to haul.
of course, this all goes into a moral obligation, where do we draw the line and how much are we responsible for self-esteem of the populace, etc. so where do we draw the line? is there more we can do? or is it really our problem?
i’d like to say being able to do this to pictures is a blessing and a curse. the mirror is never going to be as kind as a mouse and photoshop and it’s just one more step in a shallow culture. but at the same time….sure, i can fix that. you won’t believe what i can do with photoshop….

I retouch people, race cars and wedding photos for a professional photographer and love the work but it does make me laugh how different the final image is than the original.
to justify it I had to change my vocabulary. I call untouched pictures “photographs” and retouched photographs “images”. that way I can keep a mental distinction between the real and altered.

Wow, someone else posted Ni9e’s work before I got in here to do it myself. That’s great. I attended a lecture that “Fi5e” gave at RIT about a year ago and was truly fascinated with his work. That’s immediately what I thought of when I saw this post. Everyone should check out his site.

The before and after image is fascinating. Someone I know who works for a well-known sports magazine that produces a swimsuit issue (hmmm, who is he talking about?) told me that they airbrush out the abs on the female models because it would freak out the male readers to see women with muscles. All those crunches for nothing…
