We have long wanted to do a show devoted to the business of freelancing. But with my limited experience (re: five stressful months) and Donovan not really being “freelance,” per se, we were not sure we had the right perspective. So we called in four of our friends from Divvy Collective—Adam Nielsen, Ryan Sorensen, “Secret Penguin” Dave Nelson and John Henry “The Steel Drivin’ Man” Müller—who are all freelancers working from the same shared space. Sort of like a design-based season of the Real World, but without the cameras. Among the topics we discuss this week are why they got into freelancing, when it is appropriate to start freelancing, (do you need clients to begin?) and the nuts and bolts of dealing with clients, finances, and kids. And dogs. And swearing.
