Be A Design Cast 32 : Ten Rules For Hiring A Designer

Be A Design Group founder Bennett Holzworth is back on the podcast this week as we delve into the seedy underbelly of hiring designers. Specifically, what not to do. Bennett lays out his Ten Rules based on his (and my) very recent experiences finding new employment. While my experience was rather short, Bennett’s was rather long. And although both worked out great in the long run, we learned a few things along the way. You may want to call this podcast “How Not To Be A Douchebag,” but I didn’t think the powers that be would go for that title. Also: lots of singing. Thanks for listening, comments go below!

When I saw the post on the site I sort of glanced at it and just sort of thought… thats how it is in every job, why are they whining so much. After the podcast though I totally get it.

I also wanted to share a recent experience. The company was Simon and Associates and they seemed like a cool bunch of people. I went in for an interview and it wasn’t a bad interview but it wasn’t a slam dunk. They said they would let me know though. So as I always do, for agencies I am interested in, I fedexed the person I interviewed with a box of thank you cards that I design as well as a handwritten thank you card thanking her for the opportunity. They mentioned it would take them a week or so to get through everyone so I waited till the next week and then called to make sure my package had arrived and see how the hiring process was progressing. When I talked to her she sort of had to think of who I was then really think if she had received the package. She did remember though then said that they were still considering people and would let me know. I ended up getting busy and so didn’t continue to follow up and I never heard from them again. So I would count that experience as 2 and 5 plus they really strung me along unnecessarily. It could be worse but as I listened I remembered how frustrating the experience was. Plus I needed few more words to prevent a widow on this post.

Here is an idea for a show:

Ten rules for FIRING a designer.

Wow - it’s sad how thoughtlessly cruel some business managers can be. Although I now own a 10-person graphic design studio, I had my share of demoralizing experiences as a job applicant and employee. So I’ve made every effort not to treat anyone else the way I was treated. We get unsolicited applications every week, but we respond to every one with as much kindness and respect as we can muster. It’s simply the right thing to do, and in the end it also cultivates good will with the public at large. I have no doubt that it’s contributed to the success of our studio.

Nic, unfortunately, those are the perils of recording with one Mr. Bennett Holzworth. He’s just not an especially loud man.

Sorry man. That was an overall not good day for me … and yes I am soft spoken.

Maybe someday they will invent technology to pick up the sounds of a not-so-loud individual. Until then, I will stick to blogging. Nic, Here is the original post if that helps
