It is to be expected. Hollywood is all about making lots of money without spending lots of it in return. That is why the cartoon/comic book characters are being made into movies. There are hundreds of stories already written with most of the dialogs written in the stories. The story boards are already drawn out for the director. I can only imagine animated characters overall cost less than real actors. And lastly you already have a fan base that will come see the movie at least once if not more than once. Then you start all over again and pick a new story.

Nate, it’s always good to see you nerd out on this stuff… means I’m not alone.
There’s a really good write up of the Transformers beginnings over at Wired: http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/magazine/15-07/trans_toy
I knew that they ‘ripped off’ the Macross Valkyrie toy, but didn’t realize that it was a licensed deal. It was news to me to see that my beloved Transformers were a very well calculated way to sell toys.
Having read that, I think I’ve changed my tune on a lot of this stuff. It’s not a bastardization of things I held dear as much as it is a further commercialization of pop culture that became dogma to a latch key kid / couch potato.

Looks like Chipmunk Hip-hop. I feel sorry for the actor who gets green-screened in with this shit. I’m with you guys on this … sick of Hollywood remaking with bad plots and uber effects. Spiderman 1 & 2 were pretty enjoyable, just because the effects/storylines matched pretty well, and the plot was rivetting as expected. On the other hand Spiderman 3 sucked unbelievably and felt like nobody actually wrote a story, they just let the 3D guys make it up along the way. What a waste of production.
Hopefully guest voiceovers on the chipmunks include Ice Cube and all the other rapper gone actor sellouts of late.

Jason Lee… say it isn’t so!
I will always think of that guy for 2 things:
Stereo Skateboards (which he co-owns and art directs) Mallrats.
This poster will be blocked out of my memory… i hope.

The problem is people will pay to see it. We’ll never eradicate stupidity from our culture as long as there’s a market for it.
