Be A Design Cast 39 : The Green Show

Better late than never we present the Be A Design Cast Guide to Going Green. Well, less of a guide, more of a conversation about how to begin the process. Going green (or as the AIGA folks like to call it, sustainable) is not as hard as it may seem, but it does include an awful lot more consideration than just printing recycled paper and using soy-based ink.

The biggest obstacle to going green as a graphic designer, we’ve found, is there there exists no great resource of information on how to do it, or how to know that what you are doing is helping more than hurting. The closest thing is AIGA’s Center for Sustainable Design, but as a practical guide I have found it somewhat lacking. The research for this show was culled from other websites such as the one above, blogs devoted to the green life, as well as articles from our good friends at both STEP Inside Design and HOW Magazine.

Joining us once more is our main man David Kadavy coming all the way from the sunny shores of San Francisco, because he has just formed sustainableprint.org, a wiki guide to green, which we all hope will become that long-needed one-stop shop for sustainable how-to’s. Big thanks to David, who lives the green life everyday, for lending some credibility to the show.

Is using synthetic paper for projects considered a sustainable practice? It uses no trees, but does it recycle?

Stick,

If you were going to be truly Green about it, you would have to look at the manufacturing process for synthetic paper (like Yupo?). I do not know enough about that specific product to answer the question myself, but I would suggest asking the manufacturer of the sheet.

If what you are looking for is how to produce a publication in an environmentally and socially responsible way, then visit www.MagazinePAPER.org.

I direct the Magazine PAPER Project for the non profit, Co-op America. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you have at frank@coopamerica.org. We’ve helped dozens of magazines large and small to develop and implement environmental stewardship policies that begin to protect the environment, communities, and human health.

(For every ton of 100% post-consumer recycled paper that replaces a ton of virgin fiber paper, there is a 47% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.)

I listened to your podcast.

Do you know about http://designcanchange.org

It’s a great site for graphic designers to check out, on sustainability. (I forget how I originally came across it.)

Audio snafu (first 3-5 minutes) fixed.

Graphic designers looking for green ideas…

Check out re-nourish.com… it offers green resources, solely for graphic design

AND lovelyasatree.com the website that tells you everything you need to know to be a more environmentally aware graphic designer.

I haven’t seen the sustainableprint site because it’s not loading right now, but both these sights offer some very helpful information.
