Oxide Picture of the Week

From former Be A Design Group author and good friend Drew Davies:
This week’s picture of the week comes to us courtesy of the Chicago O’Hare Airport. What does it mean? That’s for you to figure out, because I have no idea why this sign exists above an airport restaurant.

Is that a joke? Why is over half of the sign in all cap? What’s up with the emphasized text? Why does this ‘salute’ seem to bring up more questions than answers?
My head hurts….cause I’ve been staring at that picture for like 10 mins., and I just don’t get it.

Could it be that “Chicago salutes” is some kind of weird name for a restaurant chain and “the graphic arts” is the name of this particular instance in their line of restaurants named after crafts? Nobody thought about the unfortunate message those would create when combined and now everybody is puzzling their head?
No?
I need sleep.

Here is a link to a little more info on this photo. It is still pzzleing me though I look at it as more of a insult or downgrad for a lack of better wording. To me it is makeing fun of the graphic community since it has really bad design in the first place.

Should I assume that everyone knows that Chicago was the site of GraphExpo, a big commercial printing trade show? And that the term “graphic arts” means commercial printing to everyone in the commercial printing industry and to most of us in graphic design? And that you all have a dry sense of humor that is lost on me, making me look like an ass for explaining a joke to the people who made the joke?

Well I’ll tell you what, Gunnar, I for one can honestly tell you I knew exactly none of that.

I’ve always looked at this sign as a sort of challenge. As if it’s saying, “CHICAGO salutes THE GRAPHIC ARTS… why don’t you prove it.”

I had to catch a connection from Chicago a few days ago and saw this, went in expecting an abundance of cool design……came out with some fries and a shake!
