    Paul Berkbigler

    Monday, March 15th, 2004

Paul Berkbigler studied illustration & graphic design at the Concordia University – Nebraska Art Department in Seward, Nebraska, and gained his Master’s degree in interactive and graphic design from Tyler School of Art, a school of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completing his undergraduate studies at Concordia, he was employed for three years at Studio X, a small private design and illustration practice in St. Louis, Missouri. Working as a direct assistant to one of the principals / founders of Studio X afforded him the opportunity to work on an extremely wide variety of commercial projects for clients including Purina, Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort, Seaworld, Square D, JBL, the Eugene Field House & Museum, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and many others. Feeling a bit restless and anxious to make a career transition into design & illustration education, he pursued the two-year Master’s design studies at Tyler, graduating in May of 2004, and entering part-time teaching at St. Louis Community College – Forest Park as well as semi-unofficially opening the doors of P. Berkbigler Design & Illustration as a “full-time” freelancer. Paul currently resides just outside of St. Louis, Missouri and will be seeking full-time employment as a professor within the year, continuing to practice design & illustration independently alongside his work as an educator. Paul’s interests include, but are rarely limited to, writing, philosophy & theory, literature, critique, theater, performance, music, composition and vocal performance, painting, printmaking, intermedia works, design, illustration, and general participation in the cultural and intellectual life of whatever area he’s found in.

    Drew Davies

    Monday, March 15th, 2004

Drew Davies, founder and design director of Oxide Design Co. is a 1995 Coe College graduate with a major in painting and graphic design, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi. This intellectual, liberal arts background gives a well-rounded sensibility and grounding to his passionate and progressive sense of design. He receives much of his inspiration from all types of ephemera – both old and modern – and as such, surrounds himself with rows of shelves overflowing with kitsch and curios collected throughout the years. Drew also has thorough experience with the business operations and account management practices of three different design firms. This knowledge allows him to craft his design as a careful balance between ingenious thinking and the client’s needs and goals.

The quality of Drew’s work has been recognized by numerous national and international design competitions, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the CLIO Awards, Graphis Design, Graphis Logo and Communication Arts.

Drew has had ten years of experience building creative design solutions for clients such as The Nature Conservancy, Unisource, University of Iowa, ConAgra Foods, Coe College, Council Bluffs Convention & Visitors Bureau, University of Nebraska at Omaha, and John Deere Construction Equipment.

Drew is the president of the Nebraska Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, a national organization with over 16,000 members. AIGA is the oldest and largest membership association for professionals engaged in the discipline, practice and culture of designing.

Drew recently returned from a trip to Menlo Park, California, where he judged the 2004 Communication Arts Design Annual, an honor bestowed on only nine national designers each year. He is the only Nebraskan who has ever been selected as a judge in the 45 years of the competition. Communication Arts, a professional journal for designers, art directors and everyone involved in visual communications, is the most exclusive major design competition in the world.

    Bennett Holzworth

    Monday, March 15th, 2004

His passions range from reading anything remotely design related to letterpressing, made possible by the acquisition of a 2,000 lb. Chandler & Price 12″ x18″ clamshell press circa 1918 and twenty trays of type. He finds that a nice balance of technology and trends (iPod, G4, Netflix, Flickr) mixed in with some good old classics (books, letterpress, Hawkeye box camera) give a nice balanced creative output. If he finds the time, he dives into painting and collage with the aid of power tools. Bennett also gains inspiration along with some visual input from his printmaking wife, Suzanne.

Bennett studied graphic design at Concordia University where he earned his BFA in 1999. Bennett has worked as a designer at several full service agencies, and as an in-house designer. Currently he is working as an Art Director at Nebraska Book Company. While living in Omaha he was an executive board member of AIGA Nebraska. His work has been featured by the AIGA, STEP Inside Design magazine and a couple recently published design books, Fingerprint and Mastering Materials, Bindings, and Finishes. Bennett founded club(red), a graphic design book club through the Nebraska chapter of the AIGA.
