Clinton Carlson

March 15, 2004

With nearly ten years of graphic design experience (more if you count the baseball publications he wrote and designed as a child), his professional life has taken him from Nebraska to Seattle to Edmonton, Alberta. He has experienced many facets of the design community, including time working for advertising agencies, design studios, publishers, corporate in-house creative departments and himself. Much of Clinton’s professional research and work has centered around information design, identity development, branding and illustration.

Clinton is currently attending the University of Alberta, in his first year of a Masters of Design program with an emphasis on Visual Communication Design. His current research is focused on design’s interaction with social issues. He is specifically interested in discovering how participatory design methods interact with health communication theories, HIV/AIDS prevention and rural communities in developing countries.

Clinton continues to do freelance illustration and design; trying to keep one foot or toe in traditional commerce-oriented design.

Stephanie Murg

March 15, 2004

Born and raised in Michigan, Stephanie has been obsessed with design since the second grade, when her parents made the wise decision to purchase an Apple IIGS computer (a limited edition signed by Steve Wozniak, no less). She soon developed strong opinions about each of the fonts available in Brøderbund Software’s Print Shop IIGS. By eighth grade, Stephanie was drooling over her friend’s father’s issues of Graphis and using GraphicWriter III to create professional-looking fake corporate mailings that she sent anonymously to friends and family, usually informing them that they had won some sort of sweepstakes, award, or competition.

Stephanie is a graduate of Harvard, where she balanced a major in neurobiology with coursework in art history, focusing on modern, contemporary, and Soviet/Russian art. She has also studied art and art history at the Center for Creative Studies and Yale University.

Although Stephanie has designed several logos and publications, she most enjoys writing and research. She has analyzed and wrote about the branding-intensive world of fashion and luxury goods for the London office of JPMorganChase and worked as a research associate at Harvard Business School. Her writing and research has appeared in the Journal of Neuroscience, ARTnews, and as a chapter in the most recent edition of Neuropsychology of Memory. When not writing about art, design, or biomedicine, she enjoys reading voraciously, painting, gallery/museum-going, the comedic stylings of Ricky Gervais, and pointing out intriguing signage to friends. Stephanie lives in New York City.
